Black and White America

Once again, Katrina is being used as an example to illustrate the racial divisions in this country. Spike Lee was on CNN earlier discussing the possibility that the levee protecting the poor, black 9th ward was purposely destroyed to save the richer, whiter areas of the city. The Boondocks comic below makes light of this theory:

While I'm sure this is untrue, it is just another one in a series of differences in perception of this tragedy. Look again at how the reaction to Katrina is split along racial lines. Much of the black community in America feels personally insulted by how this whole mess was treated by those who were supposed to protect us. People are insulted, and rightfully so.

This country is split. What can be done?

A little search reveals the flooding of 1927 is not something that was made up by McGruder.

Surely if it happened once is it not that suprising that people would believe that it could happen a second time?

That's about the dumbest crap I've heard lately. We had slavery once too. If they said there were plantations again and slaves would say you automatically believed them because it happened once? Stupid.

Not to mention that in this country where there is "institutional racism" and all that b.s., the most highly paid people in the country are mostly black (athletes). Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby have more money than some states. As soon as the hurricane hit thousands of people were rescued my military helicopters, flown almost entirely by whites. It goes on and on.

We're to believe that the country is so racist that we would flood a black area to save a white one, but then let blacks on TV to talk about it?

Give me a break.

so you're denying that racism exists in america because of athletes and tv/movie stars? are you insane?

institutional racism does exist, and there is plenty of evidence. for one, i urge you to read this paper on the difference a name can make when searching a job.

i am not a supporter of this theory and you obviously missed my point, which is that blacks and whites see a different america.
